Optimizing patient safety and financial sustainability: unraveling the economic dimensions of nursing practice in a value-based healthcare system

Abstract

Background: Value-based healthcare systems, are now stressing this sort of double need , patient safety along with financial sustainability. Nursing practice sits kinda right in the middle of that picture because nursing interventions can shape both clinical results and the economic performance of healthcare organizations. Even so, the economic side of nursing practice is still rather less explored, so there is a real gap in knowing how nursing care can be tuned to do better for safety and cost-effectiveness at the same time.

Objective: The purpose here is to look at the economic consequences of nursing interventions on patient safety outcomes, but specifically inside a value-based healthcare system. In the bigger sense this should help the discussion on improving healthcare delivery, by aligning nursing practice with financial sustainability , in a way that feels coherent in the real world.

Method: We used a mixed-methods design, combining quantitative evaluation of cost-effectiveness of nursing interventions with qualitative input collected from nursing professionals. The quantitative part checked the monetary effect of nursing practices on patient safety markers, whereas the qualitative part asked how nurses think about balancing clinical quality with financial limitations that show up in everyday practice.

Result: The findings show a quite complex link between nursing practices, financial considerations, and patient safety outcomes. More cost-effective nursing interventions went along with detectable improvements in safety outcomes. At the same time, the qualitative comments pointed to day-to-day barriers and also the tactics nurses use to reconcile economic pressures with quality care delivery.

Conclusion: This study gives meaningful insights for healthcare policymakers administrators, and practitioners, who want to line up nursing practice with economic sustainability and better patient care. These findings also show why integrated strategies matter ,because nursing practice can act like a lever for both financial returns and patient safety inside value-based healthcare systems.
