Digital Preservation & Long-Term Archiving Policy

  1. Commitment to Permanent Access

The Journal of Prevention, Diagnosis and Management of Human Diseases (JPDMHD) is committed to the permanent availability of all its published content. The journal recognises that digital content is vulnerable to technical failure, institutional change, and unforeseen discontinuation of publishing services. Long-term digital preservation is therefore a core responsibility of this journal.

JPDMHD ensures that every article published since Volume 1 (2021) is continuously deposited in multiple recognised long-term preservation archives. This policy remains in effect regardless of any change in publisher, platform, or editorial team.

  1. Active Preservation Services

JPDMHD currently participates in the following internationally recognised long-term digital preservation programmes. All three are listed in the Keepers Registry (keepers.issn.org), which is the authoritative global record of which journals are preserved and by which service.

2.1  CLOCKSS Archive

What it is

CLOCKSS (Controlled Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) is a not-for-profit, dark archive that preserves digital scholarly content for the very long term. It operates a globally distributed network of 12 archive nodes hosted at leading university libraries worldwide.

Who manages it

CLOCKSS is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organisation. It is financially supported by over 350 libraries and 250 publishers globally.

How it works

Content deposited with CLOCKSS is held in a 'dark' state — not publicly accessible during normal operation. If JPDMHD ceases publication, becomes unavailable, or the publisher is unable to continue operations, the CLOCKSS archive is 'triggered' and the content is released as open access so that all readers worldwide can continue to access the articles permanently.

Keepers Registry

JPDMHD is registered with CLOCKSS and listed in the Keepers Registry (keepers.issn.org) under ISSN 2799-1202.

2.2  LOCKSS (Global LOCKSS Network)

What it is

LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) is an open-source, peer-to-peer digital preservation system developed at Stanford University Libraries. Libraries that participate in the LOCKSS network preserve local copies of journal content and use a polling-and-repair mechanism to ensure long-term integrity.

How content is preserved

Each participating LOCKSS node independently collects and stores the full content of JPDMHD. Nodes constantly cross-check each other. If any node detects a discrepancy (e.g., data corruption or loss), the error is automatically repaired using copies from other nodes. This makes the archive highly resilient.

Access

Libraries participating in the LOCKSS network have perpetual access to content they have collected, even if the journal website is unavailable.

2.3  PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN)

What it is

The PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN) is a free digital preservation service developed by the Public Knowledge Project (PKP) at Simon Fraser University, Canada. It is designed specifically for journals using Open Journal Systems (OJS) and uses LOCKSS technology to distribute and preserve journal content.

How it works

The PKP PN plugin, integrated directly into OJS, automatically deposits published article content into the PKP PN network nodes. No manual uploading is required. Content is deposited continuously with each new issue publication.

Who manages it

The PKP PN is a community-supported, not-for-profit service. It is free for all OJS-based journals. JPDMHD uses OJS (Open Journal Systems) as its publishing platform and participates in the PKP PN through the integrated OJS plugin.

3. Keepers Registry Verification

The Keepers Registry (keepers.issn.org) is maintained by the ISSN International Centre and is the authoritative global directory that records which journals are archived by which preservation service. JPDMHD's archiving activities are registered and verifiable in the Keepers Registry under ISSN 2799-1202.

Researchers, librarians, and indexing evaluators can independently verify JPDMHD's preservation status at:

https://keepers.issn.org/keepers/issn/2799-1202

4. Continuity of Access Plan

In the event that JPDMHD ceases publication or HM Publishers is unable to continue operating the journal, the following measures ensure permanent access to all published content:

Scenario

Continuity Measure

Journal website becomes temporarily unavailable

Content remains accessible via LOCKSS nodes at participating libraries worldwide. PKP PN nodes also hold independent copies.

Journal ceases publication permanently

CLOCKSS trigger is activated: all content is released as open access and served from the CLOCKSS archive indefinitely. All DOI links will be maintained through CrossRef.

Publisher (HM Publishers) ceases operations

HM Publishers commits to providing at least 6 months' advance notice, transferring all journal metadata and content to the PKP PN and CLOCKSS archives, and ensuring all CrossRef DOI records remain active.

Platform or hosting change

All DOIs will be updated to point to the new platform. Existing archived copies in CLOCKSS, LOCKSS, and PKP PN will be maintained independently of the platform.

5. Author Self-Archiving (Green Open Access)

In addition to institutional archiving, JPDMHD actively encourages authors to self-archive their published work to maximise visibility and create additional preservation copies.

May Authors Self-Archive?

Permitted Repositories

Submitted version (preprint)

YES

Any repository, including subject repositories (medRxiv, bioRxiv, Europe PMC) and institutional repositories

Accepted manuscript (author's final peer-reviewed version)

YES

Any repository, immediately upon publication, with no embargo period.

Published version (Version of Record — PDF)

YES

Any repository. All articles are published under CC BY 4.0 which explicitly permits redistribution.

There is no embargo period. Authors may deposit any version of their article immediately upon publication. JPDMHD is listed in the Sherpa/Romeo open access and self-archiving policy directory at:

6. Persistent Article Identifiers (DOI)

Every article published in JPDMHD is assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) through CrossRef, ensuring permanent, stable linking regardless of changes to the journal website URL or hosting platform. DOIs are the most widely used persistent identifier in scholarly publishing and are required by major indexing services including Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed Central, and Embase.

  • DOI prefix: 10.55529
  • DOI registration service: CrossRef (crossref.org)
  • All DOIs are live and resolve correctly — verifiable at https://doi.org/10.55529/jpdmhd
  • DOIs remain permanently active even in the event of journal cessation, as CrossRef maintains the metadata record.
